IBM Watson and Machine Learning
I have been wondering how Uber can be the largest taxi provider yet it does not have any vehicles, Airbnb, the world’s largest accommodation provider, owns no real estate, Alibaba, the most valuable retailer, has no inventory?
Recently I was watching a whats-app video of a genius kid interview. The kid started talking about machine learning and sort of threw a term that got me all worked up (IBM Watson). I did some research about IBM Watson an then my question about Uber, Airbnb, Alibaba and many companies being big yet not owning any physical facilities was answered. All these companies have one thing in common, they use machine learning at their core.
What is IBM Watson?
Watson is an IBM supercomputer system capable of answering questions posed in natural language. It combines Artificial Intelligence (AI) and sophisticated analytical software for optimal performance as a “question answering” machine. The supercomputer is named after IBM’s founder, Thomas J. Watson. To surpass a high-functioning human’s ability to answer questions, Watson accesses 90 servers with a combined data store of over 200 million pages of information including the full text of Wikipedia.
Watson is taking something that humans are doing and doing it even better. Machine learning is here not take over the world but to help us because if machines and humans team up we can make a better world.
Will do follow up blogs on Watson and Cognitive machine learning stay tuned
